Got a call from my doctor this morning. Well, technically, it was the NP and not the doctor herself, but let's not fuss over the details. Regardless the messenger, I've got to go back in for another blood draw and another round of tests. I just had a draw a few weeks ago for an iron test. Seems like every time I go in for a physical, my iron is too low/high and I'm told to take/stop taking my iron supplements. This past fall, I was still taking them and my iron was a bit high. She told me to stop taking them for a few months, then get re-tested, which I did a few weeks ago. I called last week about the results and the nurse I spoke with told me the results were very strange. My iron levels were very high once again, but my red blood cell measurements were very low and into the anemic range. From what I've been told, this doesn't make much sense. Usually, everything reads high or everything reads low, not a combination of the two. The nurse wanted the doctor to take a look at my chart, but she was out of the office and wouldn't be back until yesterday. Thus, the call this morning.

So, back to the vampire phlebotomist I go. I'm having my period this week, so I'll probably wait until the end of next week before I head over there. Given that I have "shy veins" and it always takes at least three pricks or five minutes of digging around with a needle for them to hit anything, I can't say I'm exactly thrilled about going again, but it needs to be done.

Put a warm towel in the crook of your arm for about 10 minutes this will help the veins be more accessible. The bloodsuckers have a hard time with mine also. I have also learned to request they use a butterfly needle. I'm not sure why but it works much better.

Been there. Done that. Sometimes it helps. Sometimes it doesn't. It's a total crap shoot with me.
