We hiked to the summit of Mount Scott at Crater Lake National Park on July 18, 2009. On the way up, we started noticing a large number of butterflies zooming all around us. The numbers kept increasing the further we went up. We shot this video just shy of the summit. They are California Tortoiseshell butterflies. According to an NPS employee we met at the summit, there is a 2-3 week period each summer when the butterflies hatch and fly around the mountain. It was like being in a snowstorm of butterflies. Very beautiful. |
