What do you do if you can't sleep at night? Do you count sheep, toss and turn, or get up and try to do something productive?

category: Light & Easy

This happens to me WAY too often. I usually toss and turn for a bit and, once I realize there is absolutely no hope of me getting to sleep, I get up and try to do something productive. Problem with that is that I'm usually too tired to do anything productive so I end up playing FreeCell for a few hours until I finally feel sleepy.

If I don't fall asleep in 30 minutes I get out of bed and take something. I will usually take some Valerian root and play some Animal Crossing on my Gamecube. I do have xanax but thats really for anxiety but when you can't sleep things start to unravel and I need it.

I often count sheep and if that does not work I read for a bit and that more or less always works for me, as thankfully I do not often have problems with sleeping ;)

I usually go surf the net
or sit up in the livingroom and watch a movie.

Well, they do say that misery loves company. However, I don't think your wife would agree very much!

As a long-time insomniac depressive, I got so desperate that I too decided to have a crack at counting sheep. So I closed my eyes and visualised a flock of lovely Cumbrian Herdwicks lining up to go into a field, being beautifully shepherded through the gate by a team of highly skilled border collies. However, the counting didn't progress very far - every time a sheep went through I was like..."Hold on, back up there... your ribbon isn't straight... hey, you, that sheep over there ... stop jostling and wait your turn...and why are you sheepdogs letting that one escape !" It went from bad to worse as in my sheep-counting world I started getting fixated on the what names to choose for the border collies, the quality of the grass, the damage that needed repairing to the dry stone walling... I didn't count a single sheep - I lay awake instead wondering about how I was going to get all the jobs done on the farm. Sigh.
