Do you read or study best in silence or in a place with background noise? Why?

When I was in school, I always liked to have the radio on in the background. Now, when I'm reading, I much prefer it to be silent. Not sure if it's because the content of what I'm reading has changed, or the fact that I'm just getting old and can't concentrate as well.
